It really depends how far the gasoline got in his ear.
However, here's some consolance, the acually 'hearing' parts of the ear are quite far down the ear canal. This would make it difficult for the gasoline to get down there.
So, I would assume that the hearing troubles he's having is down to swelling in the ear canal.
However, he is going to be in considerable pain, and no matter how long you've been in medicine, there are always burns that can make you wince, and this is definitely one of them.
Anyway, without a full examination of the damage, I can't make an educated guess, so you will have to update with what the ER doctor says.
