HIV question?

HIV question?

My sister cut her arm today really bad blood was gushing out and got on my son and my self. My son has a scab on his toe where blood may have gotten, not sure though. how does hiv spread, would a scab be considered an open sore? She is gettin a test in the morning and if she is positive there is a pep test my son and I can take, has anyone heard of this test?

unless the scab was open, it is highly unlikely that your son contracted h.i.v, that is assuming that your sister is positive! scabs form a barrier over the wound to conceal bacteria from getting in..

Hello, I work in a hospital where it is common to have people exposed to blood born pathogens, and obviously HIV. In order for someone to be infected by anothers blood, it must enter your body by and open cut, or other mucous membrane of your body(such as eyes, nose, etc). You mentioned your son has a scab, which is a covering or protect the underlying skin. It is highly doubtful that if it was infected blood that it would enter your sons body through a scab. However, I do understand your concern and urge you to get tested if in fact her tests are positive. First step we take in the hospital is to test the source patient(in this case your sister) to see if they are positive for HIV and Hepatitis A. If those come pout negative there is no reason for you to need further testing. Your sister is doing the right thing by having her blood tested ASAP. I hope this helps in some way!

You are correct to be concerned, however, the mode of transmission of HIV/AIDS is such that what you are suggesting is possible, however obviously your sister would have to be positive for her to infect you or your son.  My recommendation, get your sister tested first.  If she is positive, and you did not suggest that you suspect she is, then obviously you should both be tested.  If she is negative, your testing for HIV/AIDS may not be immediately necessary, however, there are other blood borne diseases you may want to consider testing for.  See your family physician, let him make the call.

Yes. How can you be sure the scab did not have a small break in the tissue? HIV travels via body fluid into an opening in another person's body. One who is at risk should have a baseline test to rule out the infection. So, at a later time have another if they continue to be a risk and need to pinpoint the source.

ok, first you need to breath...

Yes this is one of the ways HIV is spread, but the chance of contracting it is less than 1% with a KNOWN HIV   person.  So again, BREATH...

Next, don't waste your time or money on the store test... go to the pediatrician and ask him to run the test. It is covered by the insurance, and is so much more accurate.. Plus having a doctor tell you to "don't worry" works so much more than a stranger... Good luck... and don't forget to breath
