If both the mother and father are HIV positive, will the baby be also?  I have a friend that just found out that she is pregnant and also HIV positive.  She knows now that it came from the baby's father and she is very worried that the baby will be positive too.

Now that she's been tested she will receive all the information she will need to better her chances to deliver a healthy baby. (Or lat least she's supposed too)



The possibility of the baby contracting HIV from the mother is 25%.  HOWEVER, taking antiviral drugs during pregnancy cuts down those risks to 2%!



It may not seem so now, but it's actually a good thing for her and her baby that she was diagnosed now.

There is a very good chance nowadays that the baby will not become infected, provided the mother follows the antenatal care properly.

The blood is monitored for the level of HIV circulating. I think most babies are born by caesarian to reduce the risk. The baby should also be followed with blood tests until all the maternal antibodies have disappeared.

The HIV status of the father is irrelevant.  The virus is generally not transmitted through the placenta and is only passed to the infant during birth.  There are very good drugs and protocols to prevent transmission, so with this care, the odds that the baby will be free of infection are very good.



Make sure your friend has good prenatal care, and make sure that your friend's doctor knows that she is HIV positive.

First of all, the father's HIV status has no impact on the infant.  If the mother recieves no prenantal treatment for her HIV, the baby has a 25% chance of being born positive.  If mom gets treatement then baby has a 2-3% chance of being born HIV positive.  Babies born to HIV positive moms cannot be breastfed because the virus can be transmitted through the breast milk.

I remember hearing a story on the Montel Show  that this girl met a man who had AIDS and married him and it turns out that she got pregnant and SHE DID NOT GET AIDS AND THE BABY DOESN'T HAVE AIDS EITHER.

If the woman is HIV positive and she is on antretroviral drugs it is said that the chances are 2% that the baby will have it. It depends on how high are the CD4's the t cell count and how low is the viral load. The best would be CD4 800 or higher and undetectable viral load.

In untreated HIV-positive patients, transmission to the fetus occurs in roughly 25% of cases. With prenatal zidovudine treatment for the mother and admisistration of zidovudine to the infant for 6 weeks after birth, HIV transmission is reduced to less than 10%.

Pregnant women can take medications which can significantly reduce the chance that the baby will be born infected. There is  a 1% chance that the baby will be born infected.
