Right now I have about 38" of hair, and I've been thinking for a while of giving it away to a wigs for cancer patients organization.



However, I've been having a hard time imagining what it would be like with my hair gone. I grew my hair long because of the verse: But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. Though, I think it would be fine and biblical to give something away to those who need it.



I'm afraid that if I chopped my hair off I would really miss it. After growing it out for most of life, I'm really attached to it.



Any suggestions for getting over this?

Of course you"ll miss it.  It's only natural.  If you're really attached to it, start by cutting about three or four inches off.  Once you know how it feels, then decide.



Keep telling yourself "It'll grow back, it'll grow back..."

Usually they only take 10" at a time.  That leaves you with 28".  If your hair grows 1/2 inch in the summer X 3 (July, Aug, Sept)...that's 1.5".  Your hair grows 1/4 of an inch per month in the colder months X 6 months (Oct - Mar) that's 1.5" then 1/2" for warm X 6 months (April - Sept) that's 3" again 1/4" for Oct - Mar at 1.5" April - Sept  is 3"...you have your 10" back.  By this time 2010 your hair will be where you are now.  That's only 2 yrs.

reread your REASONS for why you adored & kept it so long,  now look at the reasons you can justify cutting it.



I think it's God telling you "it's ok" and that He'd love you to share something so sacred to your personal connection with God.

What a kind, unselfish, and Godly action it would be!!

I cut my hair 10 inches for locks of love It was exciting and I felt good about it if you dont like it just tell people you cut it for locks of love they will forget about your hair whether it looks great or horrible, people will see what a nice thing you did for people who lost thier hair.

I wanted to say I think that's really nice that you want to donate your hair for cancer patients.  I was going through chemo last summer due to breast cancer and I shaved my hair off instead of waiting for it to fall out.

you only have to chop off ten inches and it's such an amazing thing to do. if i ever grow my hair that long, i'd donate it. it's a time when yuo have to let go and think of everyone fighting hair loss...cancer

Well, atleast for you its a choice.  I didnt have the choice.  My hair was not that long, but it came down the middle of my back.  I hated loosing my hair because it was so much a part of my identity.  It was kinda hard.  I was embarrassed.  I got called a dyke everytime I went in public.  I got a wig but it was uncomfortable, so I wore hats and scarves.  But in the end, I realized that my hair didnt really matter *that much.  It would grow back, and it did.  And just about the time it got to a length I liked...  I had to loose it again.  Only this time I didnt try to hide it.  And it grew back again.  Its still not as long as I want, but its getting there.  

The whole point of that is that you have the choice, and you wont be bald.  With over 3 feet of hair, you can cut a good portion and still have chin or shoulder length hair. There are many people here who never had the choice, never got to think about it.  Wouldnt you want to help those who have no choice?

I think wanting to give your hair to Locks of Love is AMAZING!!  I have super short hair ( I use hair clippers w/ a one inch setting and do it myself ) and have never had enough to donate to anything except the garbage can .



I can tell you my hair was almost shoulder length when I shaved it  the first time, and it took me a minute to come to grips with it, but I was so much happier after I got rid of it.  



I guess it depends on how badly you want to get rid of your long hair.  Do you think about it every day?  Wish there was a way to make it go away without having to pull it back?  If you answer yes to those, then go for it!  Get a super cute Bob hair cut and say hello to the new you!  Hair is just hair, it will grow back (unless you have a skin disease, which clearly you do not ) so if you don't like it, it will grow long again about a year or so
