CAT (computerized axial tomography) is now called CT (computerized tomography) scan. CT scan is used only occasionally for evaluation of the heart. It  is useful for evaluation of pericardial thickening and pulmonary embolism. For other purposes, echocardiography is more commonly used. Cardiac MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is also a promising modality.
